I was looking for a new form of fitness - to go alongside my jogging, tennis and swimming. Something which can have longevity. I became aware of Nordic Walking a couple of years ago when I did a trail run around Durdle Door in Dorset and spotted people using Nordic Walking poles. It looked like something new; a twist on basic walking and a way to bring something more dynamic to my walking motion. So I took it up! I became a qualified Nordic Walking instructor and I absolutely love it. I often take myself off at the end of a day with my poles. It’s a bit like mindfulness too, as well as getting the heart rate up! I am looking forward to sharing my love of Nordic walking with others in Dorset.
A recent article in Runners World I think is a ‘must read’ and says it all about why Nordic Walking is such an exciting pursuit - and the perfect accompaniment to any cross training regime.
I think this quote is spot on: ‘Nordic walking takes fitness walking to a new level by adding poles to produce an incredible upper body workout,’ says Svensson, founder of Nordic Body. ‘This workout increases your endurance, strengthens your core, arms, chest, back, buttocks and legs, improves your posture and flexibility and it takes stress off your ankle, knee and hip joints.’ Nordic Walking can certainly be a great complement to any existing fitness schedule.
