What a thrill to Nordic Walk for Team GB
Last weekend was incredible!
I took myself off to Lahti, Finland, where I can’t quite believe, but I was able to represent Team GB in the Nordic Walking World Championships! I knew Nordic Walking is known for being inclusive, but being immediately welcomed to share in the World Championships experience takes inclusiveness to new levels!!
A truly international community of over 300 participants gathered together from 18 countries. Smiles all round. Everyone brought together by our shared passion for Nordic Walking!
I had not spent much time in Finland before and this time I was looking forward to throwing myself into Finland life. Put it this way, I ate plenty of cinnamon buns and I enjoyed a traditional sauna, as well as enjoying the great hospitality of people in Finland.
The racing was competitive, tough and exhilarating. I was pleased to complete two 5kms (one being in the relay) and the whopping 20km on Saturday. Apparently I was in first place in my age category after 5km! Ultimately I came 5th, but I was delighted just to be taking part and finishing. All participants certainly deserved their finisher medals.
My Team GB team members were the icing on the cake. Camaraderie galore; cheering each other on ; everyone feeling welcome.
We even had 6 podium places, which put us as 7th highest performing nation over the weekend.
The whole experience was everything I think we could have hoped for. So much fun. If you fancy taking part next year, just let me know!
